Tervidians Empty Tervidians

Tervidians

Territory: Queen's Sacred Cloud (dilithium gas nebula) also called "the queendom." The home world, called Tervid by outsiders and "The home world," "throne world" or "Royal seat" by the Tervidians, is roughly three times the size of earth with immense mountains and trees the size of skyscrapers. The greater size of the planet incurs greater gravitational force than earth and the bodies of the inhabitants are subsequently stronger and more dense. The royal palace sits in the caldera of a dormant volcano and is constructed almost entirely of carved dilithium crystal. They have a presence on all worlds and stations within the nebula.

Physical Description: Tervidians are physically imposing, enormous individuals with human like features and a skin ranging from a pale ice blue to navy. Their eyes are often green or blue but the occasional hazel appears.

Males are typically between 6'-6" and 8' tall, broad chested and thick armed. In civilian attire vests are common on males due due the difficult in tailoring shirt sleeves. Their healthy weight (no equipment) can be anywhere from 300 to 600 pounds depending on height and build. The military attire ranges from a "light" battle suit to a fully mechanized outfit capable of breaking orbit. They favor dark, strong colors and sturdy boots. A typical soldier in full gear resembles a robot holding a cannon.

Females are as tall as the males but leaner. They have wide, curvy hips and well set shoulders, but not nearly to the width of their male counterparts. They have long, dark hair that whitens with age and their skin is often lighter than male family members. They also tend to wear more flowy clothing in lighter colors and favor veils, scarves, and tiaras. Female military members wear custom form fitting battle suits constructed with the superior agility of the females in mind.

Primary Government: Matriarchal Monarchy (Divine right factoring in heavily to their philosophy)
Ruler: Her Divine Luminescence Queen Tervathaki the Mighty and Fair

Technology:
Dilithium features very heavily into Tervidian technology. They have learned to harness the gas and crystals in many forms. The abundance of it allows them to create powerful objects with relative ease. It has also steered them away from certain types of technologies. For example: the Dilithium gas in the nebula and planetary atmospheres prevents the general utilization of beam weapons. The Tervidians generally use solid projectiles. A Tervidian "bullet" however is not silver based. The bullet is typically fired one of two ways. Either a particle accelerated launches the ammunition (akin to a sling shot) or a small quantity of dilithium gas is combusted with the chamber. Pellets of compressed gas are frequently incorporated into ammunition. This typically disrupts shields on impact allowing subsequent rounds to strike unimpeded. When such a rounds strikes its target it often burns into it several inches before combusting. The beam weapon that is deployed on Tervidian ships behaves in a similar fashion to the bullets: it focuses narrowly and draws energy from the surrounding gases. This enables pinpoint strikes through shields and often allows the Tervidians to target specific systems within a ship.

The Tervidians have invested a great deal of time and effort into understanding neuroscience. They can take readings of a brain, map it, and extrapolate knowledge, memories, and even dreams from the subject. This has seen many applications, including in entertainment and military.

Society: The Tervidians are matriarchal. In their early development there were times when females were scarce. Being a very intelligent bunch they capitalized on that scarcity and made clear the point that males were more expendable. One male could be used to continue the species with as many females as necessary but a female could only carry one or two young at a time to continue the species and therefore her importance was greater. This evolved into a cultural understanding that males were adaptable to anything and females needed things their way and everyone was happier if the females were happily in charge. A queen rules the royal territory. Her eldest daughter is the heir to the throne. If no female heir exists the crown goes to the wife of the eldest prince. Females may choose to share a male if they wish. Females don't typically have more than one male consort.

Society follows the will of the queen. She is regarded as the greatest of citizens (barring obvious abuses resulting in rare but intense coups). Female fashion follows hers. Male fashion follows her tastes. She rules absolutely, with vassals and governors serving her throughout the nebula.

On the whole Tervidians are a xenophobic species. Their views of other races vary from "untrustworthy" to "target practice." They have conquered all other species within the nebula and have defeated all threats that have come from without and feel very confident in their superiority as a result. They are not xenocidal, but even this is a product of their racial arrogance. The extermination of another species places too much value on said species. A queen several generations ago renowned for her compassion decreed that it was no longer acceptable to shoot trespassing aliens on-site. They had to be given fair warning and enough time to either surrender or retreat before facing annihilation. New aliens were to be directed to stations within the nebula where they could be sorted by how they would best serve the interests of the queendom. This policy remains in effect at present.

The xenophobia accounts in part for why the Tervidians have never left the borders of the queendom. They could be forced to mix with lessers, or a large number of the lessers may try to move to the greater glory of the queendom and it could place such a burden and inconvenience on the populace to have to absorb that many charity cases at once. To send an expedition out in force could also leave the Queendom without sufficient defense and lead the queen to harm. So much of their technology relies on the properties of the dilithium nebula that leaving would be like going into combat without your battle suit; you may still be victorious and bring glory to the queen but at such unnecessary risk. So they stay in the nebula. To further protect themselves those leaving the nebula are forced to forget anything but a beautiful and useless gas cloud. This also protects the queen, and withholds the memory of her glory from those who would not live within it.

Military: There are 40 Royal legions in the service of Her luminescence the queen. Each boasts at least one juggernaut, a massive ship with a crew of over 10,000 and the capacity to maintain orbital bombardment of an entire hemisphere.  Other ships, including carriers, transports, smaller capital ships and more standard size vessels  belong to various legions based on their need. The 28th legion has a smaller juggernaut ( if you can call it that) with hanger bays and docking ports and a large number of patrol craft and boarding vessels as their task is monitoring a specific trade corridor within the nebula. The 1st legion is charged with defending the queen and the home world and includes 5 juggernauts and an armada of lesser capital ships.

Each legion is commanded by a female viceroy representing the voice of the queen and a lord commander (typically male but sometimes female) with generals and admirals serving beneath them as necessary. Their are officers, NCOs, and enlisted "grunt" ranks beneath them.

Khans are special servants of the queen within a legion. They answer directly to the viceroy. No troops are permanently assigned to their command, though entire legions have been placed as such in special (very temporary) circumstances. It is rumored that khans, famed for their unparalleled devotion to the queen, are also the Queen's mechanism for preserving the loyalty of the viceroys and the Lord commanders. Whatever the rumors there are certain facts:
1) no two khans are exactly alike
2) no khan has ever betrayed their queen
3) all khans receive special training in physical and mental conditioning
4) khans may kill, and only other khans or the queen herself may challenge their decision to do so

All military members pledge their lives and loyalties to her majesty, May her crystal palace ever glow

There are other intelligent races represented in the nebula. Some are indigenous, others "arrived" from elsewhere. The Tervidians remain the dominant race.

I moved this topic to the resources section where I believe it is more relevant. Thanks for posting this Daniel, I would urge the writers to become familiar with the Tervidians as they will play a large role going forward.

Yorktown is docked at border station L14D Laratha.

L14D is a designation while Laratha is the station name (like USS Yorktown). L14 means that the station is under the jurisdiction of the 14th Royal Legion. "D" is what the universal translator substituted for the 4th letter of the Tervidian alphabet. I am no linguist and am acutely disinterested in developing their language, but it is the 4th of the stations under the jurisdiction of the 14th Royal Legion. It is unlikely that persons on board the xeno section of the station know the exact number of stations, but some have been to station L14J closest to the Ferengi border.
