Born Alex Banner, Alex had a Human father and a Bojoran mother. Alex was the son of an alcoholic who deeply hated him. Alex's mother showed much affection for her child, who returned her love, but this only served to fuel his father's rage. Dr. Brian Banner was an Atomic Physicist who worked on producing clean nuclear power as an energy source, but he was afraid his exposure to it mutated his son's genes. Alex ended up showing signs of high intelligence at an early age which only seemed to strengthen his father's belief. Brian became abusive to Alex and when his mother intervened, Brian murdered her. He frightened Alex to keep quiet, but his own bragging landed him in a psychiatric institute.

As a child Alex was withdrawn, possibly developing a split personality to help deal with his pain and rage. Alex found it hard to develop friendships and often found himself on the receiving end of physical abuse at the hands of school bullies. One such incident sparked him to build a bomb and plant it in the basement of his school. The bomb was a dud, and Alex was expelled, but the Military took notice of his genius and quickly began recruiting him for the Starfleet Academy. While in the Academy Alex earned high marks in many areas and was eventually accepted into the Starfleet Officer Training School where he earned his Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering with a specialization in Military Spacecraft Design and Development.

After his graduating from the Officer Training School Sumo moved to Bajor where he served as the Personal Security Guard for Gyntil Daala. At the time Daala was a well traveled Religious Leader of the Bojorans and the target of many terrorist organizations. These organizations seemed hell bent on assassinating the man who claimed to be visited by the Bojoran Gods. Daala’s claim earned him millions of followers and to this day many Bojoran’s still consider him to be the Chosen One of their species. To earn the respect of Daala and show his loyalty, Alex legally had his name changed to Sumo when he was 32.

Fascinated with the stars since a young age, Sumo yearned for a career with the Federation. So after 12 years of close calls, thwarted assassination attempts and over 20 scars from inaccurate phaser shots, Sumo applied for a position with Starfleet Command. With his impressive resume and excellent reputation with the Federation, it didn’t take long for Sumo to receive his first Command post on the USS Yorktown.
