Background:

David Mayne was born to a Human Father and Bajoran Mother who were members of the terrorist organization known as The Maquis. The family ties to the Maquis can be traced back to a human colony that was illegally settled outside of official Federation space, in territory claimed by the Cardassian Union. The Cardassians did all they could to drive the illegal squatters off the planet toeing a line to prevent open warfare that would draw the Federation into conflict with the Cardassians. The Federation chose to ignore the Human settlers as they refused to relocate to Federation space, and did not want to be associated with a group of rebels that were taking up arms to defend their home from the Cardassian threat.

Living in constant fear of being attacked and driven from their home instilled a hatred for the Cardassians at a young age for David. After the Dominion War ended, and Cardassia was crippled, the Federation gained control over the planet his family had called home. David decided to join Star Fleet, a decision his parents were not happy with as officially his parents were branded "terrorists" by the Federation, and Star Fleet had not come to their aid while the Cardassians had been terrorizing their home. Still David recognized joining Star Fleet as a way to make something of his life. He did not want to be a farmer on a back water colony his whole life, and perhaps he could one day clear his parents name if he could gain influence with the right people.

Being a child of Maquis, David was quite adept at tinkering and fixing things, a skill the Maquis needed to have to keep old or stolen alien technology working on their small colony. He excelled in the engineering program at the Academy, and graduated as an Engineer. He spent his first several years out of the academy working at the ship yards orbiting Mars, where he worked on a team that redesigned and refitted older star fleet vessels. While he enjoyed his work, he yearned for a more exciting post on the frontier. He transferred to the USS Maekong, where he served as assistant chief engineer. A few years later he was offered a promotion and a transfer to the USS Yorktown, which he eagerly accepted. It was there that his life took another turn as he met Vestara, a fellow Bajoran. The two quickly fell in love and within a few months had married.
