Background:

Rawnk started flying for his father at the young age of 15, proving himself useless in every other endeavor - from negotiating, to accounting. Unlike most Ferengi, he did not have a "lobe for business," and thus concentrated on making his father's business profitable by decreasing operational costs through efficient maintenance and, notably, flying the family's merchant vessel.

However, as Rawnk grew to his late teens and early 20's, he found himself unable to upwardly move in Ferengi society due to his lack of bartering and business skills. In an attempt to increase profits, he attempted to secure several trading deals with some Cardassians, but his above-average flying was the only thing that kept him from being killed in the process.

Disillusioned by the prospect of becoming a profitable merchant, Rawnk soon found himself at the door to the Academy, where the opportunistic young adult gained entrance due to the limited number of Ferengi (he was the third one to ever join). Because of his lack of diplomatic skills, Rawnk settled into the life of a helm cadet, where he would sharpen his teeth more than skills, thereby barely commissioning as a Starfleet officer.

His first assignment as the helm officer for a medical ship almost ended disastrously when he turned the ship into a collision course with a deep space station. Consequently, he was passed for promotion twice, and eventually ended up as part of the crew for USS Volga, a botany survey ship. Rawnk finally ended up as part of the USS Yorktown due to a measure of good luck and some opportunistic maneuvers.

Being a Ferengi in the Federation, let alone aboard a Starfleet ship, is not terribly easy. With only a handful of others of his kind serving in Starfleet, Rawnk was soon notorious for his ambiguous character, and often comical nature. Having spent four years as an Ensign, he was ready to move on and make a name for himself, in a good or bad way, and roam the galaxy under the command of Capt. Drexel. He can usually get along with most individuals aboard, and has found himself at the center of attention with the stories he has heard throughout his journeys as a youth. A hard worker, he does not criticize nor discriminate, as he believes that "deep down, everyone's a Ferengi."
