Nala Koshka has been in space for as long as she can remember due to her parents, Malachi and Liliana, having careers within Star Fleet. Her mother was a historian, her father an intelligence officer. Her parents raised her to understand that every person was important, no matter their gender or species. She always knew she wanted to help people, she just didn't know how.

Nala's love for nursing came from a very dark time in her life. When she was 13, her father spent many days in the sick bay before finally passing away. Throughout his stay, there was a nurse who showed her father so much kindness and empathy, and his final days were very peaceful because of this. Nala realized then that this was her calling.

Nala's abilities are particularly strong. From a young age, she's been able to clearly distinguish the different feelings and emotions around her, her telepathic abilities coming in her early teens. Her abilities allowed her to connect with her patients in a way many others couldn't, which in turn made nursing the perfect career. She was able to know just what the patient was feeling, and could in turn help provide the best care possible.

Nala joined the ranks of the Star Fleet at the age of 20 as an assistant nurse, and had steadily worked her way up to a nurse. When aboard her 3rd ship, the USS Kaiser, her captain decided she would be a perfect fit aboard the USS Yorktown since she would finally be able to move up in the medical field. She was yearning to become a head nurse, a rank that she would finally be able to have the opportunity to achieve.
