Background: Born during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor, Vestara Dorvan (as she was known before she married) spent her youth at a labor camp where her parents were assigned, mining Dilithium for their Cardassian masters. She was the younger sister of 2 children, her brother Varile, was caught attempting to steal food from the Cardassians to feed the labor camp, and was tortured and executed in front of the laborers to make an example of them. That harsh image of watching her brother scream in pain has scarred her for life.

She escaped the labor camp as a teenager when legendary Bajoran hero Kira Nerys of Deep Space Nine lead a raid with the Bajoran resistance to free the slaves. Vestara and her parents spent some time moving from home to home as refugees, and it wasn't until Bajor got accepted into the Federation that Vestara got the opportunity to leave her pitiful life behind her, and join Star Fleet.

While, like most Bajorans, she was uneasy with the Bajoran government joining the Federation so soon after freeing themselves from Cardassian control, she knows that the Federation was all that kept the Cardassians from returning to enslave them once again. Her experiences with the Cardassians have caused her to be untrusting of anyone who isn't Bajoran, she bottles her xenophobia hoping that one day she will get the opportunity to avenge her brother.

She is learning what skills she can from Star Fleet so that one day she can use them to help make Bajor a power in the galaxy, and to prepare themselves for the inevitable day when Cardassia frees itself from the sanctions placed on them after the Dominion War and again take up arms against Bajor.

It is not all darkness for Vestara though. 1 year ago after transferring aboard the Yorktown, she met David Mayne, a fellow Bajoran (thought he had a Human Father) and the two hit it off immediately...3 months later they married. While they are relatively new to the ship compared to some of the others, they don't see the Yorktown as their final destination in their career, just a simple posting they serve at while awaiting a more exciting opportunity.
